FROM THE STUDIO TO THE BEACH
My fitness journey
BALLET STUDIO TO THE FITNESS ROOM
From the time I was three to right before high school... you could find me at the ballet studio. Three hours a night during the week, and all day Saturdays. I gave it my all. My heart. My soul. Until I decided it was all too much and I was missing out on so much socially! A nerd at heart. I started giving my all to studying and the youth group at church, but stayed active on the swim team. Needless to say, this girl has always been acutely aware of the way I looked. AND was always with folks who literally could see every curve. I would never be described as "chunky" or "skinny," consistently falling somewhere in-between. I felt strong and energetic into college playing on an intramural soccer team for a couple semesters. But, life and projects won out and the gym became a once in a while activity.
Fast forward a few years to getting engaged and wanting to tone a little, I started putting regular time in on the elliptical and taking the occasional gym class along with portion controlling my junk food habit by ordering the kids meal and diet soda. In truth that actually worked. I dropped a few pounds and felt a little better. But, then we wanted to get pregnant. I was already at the top of my "healthy weight bracket/BMI" (which now... I know is not a great way to gage) and I knew I had to do something before gaining some baby weight just like my sister and friends.
I found a trainer and started out on a journey that continues to grow to this day. Jeff was awesome. He made me a meal plan, patiently showed me how to use each machine at the gym, wrote out workouts and schedules for me... and then I started doing his bootcamps 2x a week (on the beach, they were awesome!).
BACK TO THE GYM
My super awesome trainer decided to move and open his own studio... so this fit gal headed back to the gym. Classes. Cardio equipment. You name it, I tried it and created a little schedule for myself. I brought and made friends there. It was fun. And, to some degree, I felt like I had found a great place to land. Once the kiddo was old enough, she came with me and even sort of asked to go a few times. Kids care was a blessing for sure.
After about a year at the gym, I also discovered BARRE class. Holy moly. How much do I love barre? It's so great! For me, the perfect blend of ballet movements, pilates and yoga. Trust me. I am counting the days until my online workout portal comes out with a barre-type workout!
The thing about losing the support of that trainer though, is that I somehow lost a bit of focus. Sort of going through the motions. Not tracking. Not making sure I was doing things "right" or making progress.
Two years into the gym life the stress from work + a bit of over training put me in a strange fitness holding pattern. I wasn't sure where to go from there or how to get out of the plateau. I did know that I needed to do something though. I lowered my calorie intake so far to try to force progress, I actually started hurting my metabolism, killing my digestive system and gaining weight.
INTO THE LIVING ROOM
At a family dinner, my hubby's cousin told us about her new workout program. I have to admit. I was not super interested. (Hard to imagine now). But, my hubby was. 25-minute workouts at home, no driving, no checking into kid's club... it sounded like heaven to him. We decided to try it together. Needless to say, we were hooked! Totally totally hooked. After 3 months, I cancelled both our gym memberships and suddenly, it was official. We became "home gym people"! Opting to save travel time, we started sweating it up with our new trainer, Shaun T, anytime we wanted to. Woot!
About a month in, my digestion was still off... but holy moly. I felt like I was so much more progress in just 25 minutes instead of over an hour! What? Seems that over training was a big culprit. This experience taught me so many things. And I was starting to fall in love even more in love with this fit lifestyle. No longer a chore. Fun! And time with the hubby was an added bonus. :)
SHARING A PASSION FOR NUTRITION + FITNESS
SEEKING NUTRITION INFO
Feeling good with my workouts. Stronger, more focused, with a goal in mind. Digestion was still a little off and finally was not gaining anymore. Whew. Progress! My hubby bought me some crazy teas that were supposed to help. AND honestly, they did. I went to a digestive health doctor who sent me on a series of prescriptions that just made it all worse. More bloating. More pain. I kept thinking this can't be the answer. I felt like there was something I was missing. Some piece of info that would help me. To google I went! While there, I found this whole new world of holistic nutrition. Hooked! I was hooked! I read so many articles from several sites. Started making small changes to my meal plan based on this... guess what? PROGRESS was made! Even more, every day, it was clear: NUTRITION IS EVERYTHING!
The hubby and I started talking about doing a cleanse. I mean they were super popular. And people all around us were seeing awesome weightloss results. We both had that pesky "last few pounds" to lose. I knew a juice cleanse was not for me. (This girl likes to EAT way too much!) We both hit google hard. There were a couple that were juice + snacks. We even decided on one (thanks Groupon!) and I was about to order it, when he said, "hey, what about the one we see on the workout "commercials"?" Hmmmm.... ok. More gooogling! Shakes + meals. It boosted a little weight loss AND it helped your digestion. Yes! I was all in on this. We were totally doing the Three Day Refresh.
Remembering that one of my high school friend's wives was selling it, and knowing that buying from her would help their family, I messaged him for her contact info. She went over the benefits AND called me all three days! How cool is that. Totally unexpected. Very appreciated! In just three days, I felt better, fell in love with Shakeology and made a new friend (who is now one of the nearest and dearest ladies to my heart).
COACHING WITH LOVE
Quickly after the refresh was over, this new friend mentioned the idea of coaching. She said, "you're already sharing your journey and helping others. You love the meal replacemetns. Why not coach and get them paid for?" HHHMMMM... what? I could earn a little extra for loving folks around me and working out? Initial thought: Yes! Yes, please! Sign me up! Next thought: How am I gonna add this into my life? And, what will the hubby think? What will my friends think? I wonder if I can do this full time. Well. You know what I did... to Google and YouTube of course! I found lots of opinions. Lots of advice. And also, soooo much love!
I realized this is something I could so totally do! I signed up (fantastic way to spend some bday moola) and took off running… quickly finding that helping folks on their fitness journeys brings me such unimaginable joy and contentment. It’s nuts! I finally found my “thing.” And, I tried a lot of stuff!
A year and a half later, I am building my own team. Slowly, but surely. To me, it’s about quality not quantity. The coaches on my team are awesome, supportive and encouraging. It’s amazing to me how close you can get to people just from talking daily about a common goal. Love them all. And most of them I’ve never met in person! It’s not all fun and games. It’s totally hard work. But, I love every minute of it!
